Canton, Massachusetts is a beautiful town located approximately 15 miles southwest of Boston at the foot of Great Blue Hill. Covering just under 20 square miles, Canton has a population of approximately 22,000 residents. The town is governed by a Board of Selectmen with an open town meeting format.
Building on colonial New England roots, Canton has flourished into a modern suburb with excellent schools and a thriving economy.
Canton’s Role in Local History
Canton, Massachusetts is one of the oldest villages in the country, first settled in the 1630s and later incorporated in 1797. At the turn of the 19th century, Paul Revere built a copper works in Canton, in part to fulfill contracts to provide copper sheathing for the dome of the Massachusetts State House and for the hull of the U.S.S. Constitution. In 1835, construction of the Canton Viaduct completed railway service between Boston and New York. The Canton Viaduct stands today as the last surviving railroad viaduct of its kind in the U.S. still in service.
